Best Beagle Harness - Our 11 Favorite Harnesses

**Updated 2024 Guide**

Tired of your beagle tugging and pulling on their leash during a walk?  Switching to a harness for your Beagle will be a sound investment.  Further more, there are multiple benefits of using a harness for both you and your pup.

There seems to be a wide array of dog harnesses available these days.  With all of the different features to consider this can be a daunting task to pick out the perfect beagle walking harness.

In this article, we look at our favorites and compare them based on cost, function, materials and much more.  First though, lets talk generally about the benefits, types and features to consider when looking for the best beagle harness.

Benefits of Using a Harness for Beagles

Less strain on the neck and throat – A good beagle harness will take the tension off of the neck and collar area and redistribute it throughout the dog’s chest and shoulder area.  A properly fitting harness will lead to less pulling and tugging from the dog, while also taking pressure off of the neck and throat, thus reducing coughing and hacking.

Better control of the dog’s movements – A secure harness simply gives the dog handler better control.  Whether your beagle is chasing a rabbit, trying to greet another dog or excited to see a family member, having complete control over your beagle is vital to both the safety of your pet and the animals and humans in their surroundings.  The right size harness offers the ability to control your dog’s movements and actions far better than a traditional dog collar.

Improved safety during walks – Many harnesses incorporate reflective material into the vest or add strips of reflective tape or fabric at key locations on the exterior of the harness. Additionally, there are numerous light producing add-ons that can easily be clipped or secured to the harness to add extra visibility during low light or nighttime conditions.

Making yourself and pup highly visible should be of utmost concern when you are out and about, especially at night.  Even with reflective materials, LEDs or flashlights, always walk defensively and never assume vehicles and traffic nearby can see you.

Types of Harnesses for Beagles - What Harness Is Best For Beagles?

Over-the-Head Harness – This type of harness is probably the most frequently used design.  They have different locations for adjustment, but generally it will fit over your Beagle’s head without opening a clip or securing a latch.  Once over the head, straps extend behind their front legs and are clipped near the top of the back, behind the shoulders.

These harnesses for beagles provide a secure fit and plenty of adjustability, but your dog will almost certainly get annoyed with putting on and taking off the harness over their head and ears.  We’ve found this to be only a minor inconvenience, especially considering the security and comfort they provide once in place.

Step-in Harness – Just as the name implies, these harnesses don’t go over the head first, instead the two front legs will go in the holes on the underside of the harness followed by a secure clip near the back, above the Beagle’s shoulders.  This type of harness is a great option if your beagle has a large, boxy head that can cause stress when trying to fit a snug fitting harness over their head first.

No-Pull Dog Harness or Muzzle Harness – This variety of harness fits around the upper portion of the dog’s neck and the muzzle.  It fits in a manner that allows adequate breathing and use of the mouth, but when your dog tries to pull it redirects the dog’s head and muzzle.  Most dogs don’t like this redirection and tension on their muzzle, therefore they learn very quickly to stick close by when on a walk.

It is our opinion that these are not the perfect dog harness, they can be uncomfortable for the dog and challenging to put on and take off for each use.

Features to Consider When Picking the Best Beagle Harness

Leash-Attachment Points – Attaching your leash to the harness can be done in two ways, either by use of the front clip or the back clip.  Some harnesses offer both options, but the one that you use will depend on personal preference and also the type of activity you’ll be undertaking.

Using the front clip will give you a higher level of control over your Beagle and its movements – this is the best option for when on a walk around the neighborhood or where you would anticipate encountering other dogs, animals or people.

The back clip is a great option to use with a long leash where you give your beagle more freedom to roam and explore.  The back clip is up and out of the way so your beagle’s legs will get entangled in the leash less often.  The back clip doesn’t redirect your dog like the front clip does when they pull too much, thus the back clip attachment will give the owner less control and leverage over the dog.

Comfort and Fit – The best harness is one that fits comfortably and securely around your dog’s chest.  Adjustability of the harness’s straps are essential, more on this below.  To achieve the full benefit of the harness and all its features, a snug yet comfortable fit is necessary.

A loose fitting harness will encourage more pulling and wandering – along with the possibility of your dog escaping all together.  Look for a harness with wider straps and a larger chest pad to better distribute the tension when your Beagle pulls.

Durability and Material – A durable, high-quality, harness can last for a dozen years or more even with everyday use.  Although small to medium-sized, beagles are a strong breed with plenty of power to put stress on the harness…especially when they see a bunny or squirrel and their high prey drive kicks in.  And, beagles are fast, you don’t want them to get loose!

Look for a harness with corrosion resistant plating on the metal leash rings.  Fabric of the harness should be several layers of a heavy-duty nylon with reinforced stitching at the seems and joints.  The harness closures, snaps or clips are often plastic, but look for clips that are a heavier gauge plastic that offer a secure, tight and sturdy closure.

Adjustable Straps – The Beagle is an excellent escape artist.  It’s in their nature to squeeze through tight spaces, to chase and retrieve their prey. A Beagle harness with multiple adjustment points is important, several adjustable straps that can tighten and snug to your dog’s body will be most beneficial to keep your dog safe.

Highly adjustable models will be helpful as your puppy grows to maturity or as your adult beagle gains or loses weight.  With a little luck, and help from this article,  you’ll be able to purchase just one harness that will have the longevity and adjustability to last a Beagle’s lifetime.

Reflective Material – Reflective strips and reflective trim incorporated into the harness are two simple and must-have features that every great harness should include.  Reflective materials are a tremendous benefit when walking in low light or dark conditions, every little reflection of light helps with your and your pet’s safety.

Additionally, opting for a harness with bright colors or different colors that contrast with your dog’s coat can be very helpful if your dog gets off their leash and is lost.  Everyone knows a dog with a harness running free is probably lost, so this will help neighborhood and community response should you need help finding your lost pup.

Size and Weight Capacity – Carefully read the harness manufacturer recommendations regarding size and weight capacity.  We’ve already discussed that most harnesses are adjustable, but they all have minimum and maximum size limitations.

A Beagle will usually fit in a small or medium sized harness, but to make sure you’re purchasing the proper size have the following measurements from your dog available; weight, neck circumference and chest girth.  A properly fitting harness is important for your dogs safety, security and comfort during outdoor activities.
